Some Facts About Tattoo Removal

Ricardo D Argence asked:

Tattoos have been around since before recorded history. There is evidence that the ancient Egyptians practiced tattooing, and primitive tribes today use tattooing for various tribal rituals as well.

Tattoos are created by making deep holes in the skin and filling them with pigment of some kind. Today’s tattoo artists use a tattoo gun with a fast moving needle that applies the ink as they move over a design drawn on the body.

Tattoos are fairly permanent once they are applied, so be sure you want one before you walk into the tattoo parlor. If you really want one, think carefully about the design you’re getting.

If you are determined to get a tattoo, choose the parlor carefully. It should be licensed by the state and keep hygienic standards.

Keep the design simple, up to three colors is still fairly easy for a doctor to remove if you find yourself disliking the tattoo in the future.

Think carefully about where you want the tattoo, try to choose someplace that will heal quickly, and is easy to conceal when you need to, like in the workplace. If you suspect an infection, see your doctor as soon as possible before it gets worse.

So, you have your tattoo, and down the road you decide to get it removed. Your doctor will probably refer you to a dermasurgeon for the procedure.

The doctor’s choice of removal procedure will depend a lot on the size of the tattoo, the location of the tattoo, and how long you’ve had it. How your body heals may also factor into his or her decision.

Most tattoo removals will leave at least minor scarring, and maybe color variations in the skin. The success of the removal will depend on the size of the tattoo, the location, the evenness of the pigment and the age of the tattoo.

Excision is used on small tattoos, or in several stages for larger ones. The site is anesthetized, and then the tattoo is excised, or cut away.

The edges of the incision is then brought together and stitched. If this method is used for a large tattoo removal, a skin graft may be needed.

Dermabrasion is a procedure where a solution is sprayed on the tattoo which freezes the area. It is then “sanded” off with a rotary abrasive tool that makes the skin peel.

A dressing is applied afterwards, since some bleeding will happen.

Laser is considered the best method of tattoo removal by many physicians. A cream is rubbed on to numb the skin, and then pulses of laser light is applied, breaking up the pigment.

The healing process will remove the broken up pigment. Laser treatment usually takes more than one visit.

Salabrasion is a centuries-old technique to remove tattoos. A local anesthetic is used to numb the area. Then a solution of water and table salt is applied.

An abrading tool, like the one used in dermabrasion is applied, or sometimes a simple little block of wood covered in gauze is used to abrade the area. When the area turns red, a dressing is applied.

Johnathan Scott asked:

Still the preferred method of tattoo removal, Lasers have been making advances in effectiveness which should eventually

translate into faster clearance and less pain during the typical removal session. The best thing about fast clearance is fewer treatments and a lower cost to remove the average tattoo.

If laser is the way you are going there is some basic information that can help you find the best laser clinic in your area. If your tattoo has any red, orange, pink or lighter colors you will need a 532nm green light laser for quick and effective clearance. If you have green, turquoise, sky blue, teal, etc. you will need a 755nm red laser to do a proper job. A 1064nm infrared laser is what you will need to clear black, dark blue, brown and darker colors. All three lasers can be used at the same treatment time, as the lasers will only work on the color that it is attracted to.

The laser brands currently on the market that are most effective at ridding the skin of the above described tattoo ink are, in order of effectiveness:

1). Affinity QS-Q Switch 532nm/1064nm

2). Medlite/RevLite – Q Switch 532nm/1064nm

3). Accolade – Q Switch 755nm

Knowing which lasers you need for the colors in your tattoo can save money by preventing unscrupulous laser removal clinics from knowingly using the wrong laser in order to require more return visits.

Next in effectiveness is the TCA or Cosmetic Acid peel. The great appeal of this method is the cost. Average tattoos can be cleared for less than $50 – $100. The same size tattoo removed with laser would cost in the range of $1000.00 to $2000.00.

The treatment cycle for TCA is shorter than laser, but the user must read and follow instructions that come with the particular brand they choose. Some sellers offer strengths up to 100% (actually probably closer to 98% because 100% TCA would be in a solid crystalline form). Lower strength formulations are all that is necessary for tattoo removal, and safer.

Fears of scarring are somewhat exagerrated by competitors selling different methods of removal, but care must be taken. Also consider the fact that tens of thousands of ****** peels to remove fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and to remove or reduce acne scars are performed every year with no reports of scarring. In fact just the opposite effect takes place, that’s why ****** peels are so popular.

Dermabrasion would come in third in effectiveness and take longer to accomplish a satisfactory end result. Dermabrasion usually consists of either a hand powered exfoliation pad of varying coarseness or an electric/battery powered exfoliator followed by an application of a lotion or cream to soothe the exfoliated or “sanded” skin. This is done daily or three to four times a week depending on how rough the exfoliation.

The least effective tattoo removal method is the current batch of tattoo removal creams. They all consist of some form of skin lightening chemical that prevents or reduces the production of melanin, the substance in the skin that determines the color of your skin. Most skin lightening ingredients are effective at reducing melanin, but have zero effect on tattoo ink, they are physically incapable of removing tattoo pigment and are a waste of your time and money. In particular it is advisable to avoid lightening creams containing Hydroquinone, a known cancer causing chemical when used in high doses over prolonged periods of time.

The giveaway to the ineffectiveness of tattoo creams is the lack of any type guarantee by the manufacturer or the offer of a guarantee that is, for all intents and purposes, impossible to meet and therefore useless. Tattoo removal cream companies do not return money once the sale has been made. There is even one new comer to the market that sells a product strictly as a skin lightening cream and then relabels the same formula and sells it as a tattoo removal cream under the guise of an objective skin health organization. This is an instance where the famous saying Caveat Emptor, (Let the buyer beware), should be observed.

Home Tattoo Removal AKA DIY Tattoo Removal – "What You Should Know"

Posted on 22nd of July, 2010
Allen J Pollick asked:

Home Tattoo Removal or DIY tattoo removal is becoming more well known, has gained respect and is greatly increasing in popularity around the world.

While it used to be a fact that most Home Tattoo Removal methods always caused scarring and severe pain, this no longer has to be true, especially with all that has been recently learned about tattoo removal.

A Tattoo can turn out to be a mistake that will seemingly last a lifetime. You may have gotten a tattoo during a tattoo fad or maybe even while you were intoxicated or not in the right state of mind. Now you’re to the point that you no longer want the tattoo and you are trying to find an inexpensive way to remove it.

Tattoos can be undesirable for many reasons. It makes it harder to get a job if you have tattoos and many people think tattoos are "trashy." It is ideal to think people should not judge a person for having tattoos, but in all reality many people do!

Tattoo removal can be very expensive when done by a professional. It can cost up to triple the amount (if not more) of what you paid for the tattoo. Some of the professional tattoo removal techniques that are available are: surgical removal, skin grafting and dermabrasion.

All of these tattoo removal procedures are extremely time consuming and usually very painful. Nearly half a million people spend this extra time and money on getting their unwanted tattoos removed every single year. Even with professional tattoo removal complete removal of the tattoo is extremely rare.

This is why Home Tattoo Removal or DIY tattoo removal is becoming a more well known and respected procedure.

There are some excellent do it yourself tattoo removal techniques that are just as effective, if not more effective than getting your tattoo removed professionally. All tattoo removal processes take time and patience and it is important to stick with the routine if you want to say goodbye to your tattoo.

One of the newest and most effective Home Tattoo Removal techniques is called Fade Away. Fade Away works by applying a series of creams to the tattoo. Like I mentioned before it must be done consistently to be the most effective. The Fade Away works by breaking down the ink in your skin and letting the ink be disposed of by your body. This method seems to be the least expensive and less painful method available for DIY tattoo removal. There are many different types of Fade Away creams that can be purchased worldwide.

Believe it or not, another do it yourself tattoo removal method that is becoming more recognized is the laser removal. Laser removal was previously only preformed by licensed physicians but now can be done in your own home.

It is important to be very cautious when using a laser removal product. There must be appropriate gear worn while performing the procedure. If everything is not done exactly how the manufacturers of the laser state on the product instructions, there could be major physical injury to you and the person helping you to remove the tattoo. Laser removers can be very costly but are effective.

Laser removal equipment, when used properly, breaks down the ink in the skin to where it is small enough for your body to break it down. Laser removal methods can be very time consuming and painful.

In order to decide the best method for your DIY Tattoo Removal it is important to determine the size of the tattoo, the location of the tattoo on the body, what colors are used in your tattoo and how deeply the ink has penetrated into the skin.

If the tattoo is located in a place where the skin is very thin, like on the ankle or the top of the foot, it would be ideal to go with the Fade Away creams as they wouldn’t be nearly as painful as the laser removal method.

If the tattoo is deeply penetrated into your skin it would be ideal to go with the laser removal as it can get deeper into your skin to break down the tattoo ink. Whatever the method there are health risks involved and it would be ideal to check with your physician before beginning the treatment.

Regardless of what option you would like to try, it is important that you find the removal technique that works best for you, not the guy down the street. We are all individuals, and therefore, we react differently to different products.

Tattoo Removal Options – How To Remove A Tattoo Effectively

Posted on 18th of July, 2010
Steve W. asked:

In this article we’ll examine how different tattoo removal options are used to help people at all ages to remove tattoos from their bodies they no longer appreciate. One of the many reasons for people to remove tattoos is to get rid of something they don’t want to remember, for example a person’s name when the love is over.

What is a tattoo? Tattoo is made on the body by burying color pigments inside the skin’s surface. Since it is embedded inside the dermal layers, tattoo can’t be easily destroyed even though with severe burn. Tattoos are built to last forever. Removing them is very difficult and expansive. So, how to remove a tattoo and what are the available tattoo removal options?

Here are a few common methods on how to remove a tattoo:

1. Remove tattoo with micro dermabrasion: Micro skin dermabrasion method is a sand blasting process that sprays fine abrasive oxide across tattoo areas in order to remove the outer and middle skin layers that hold the tattoo pigments. The body will replace the injured skin surface with new and healthy cells. Some dermabrasion instruments are in the form of polishing wheels to “sand off” the tattoo skin layers. The pain during this procedure is within bearable limits.

2. Remove tattoo through freezing (cryosurgery) method: A localized frostbite is created at tattoo areas through freezing of the skin surface with liquid nitrogen spray. The frostbite with tattoo pigmentation will peel off in the next 3 to 4 weeks after the treatment. Scars may develop with this method.

3. Remove tattoo with chemical peels: Chemical solution and sometimes acid is used to etch away the outer skin layers gradually until the dermal layer with tattoo pigmentation is reached.

4. Remove tattoo with excision: Excision surgery is only suitable for small tattoos. For large tattoos, several treatments are usually required together with a skin graft to cover up the skin. Excision involves a local anesthetic to numb the tattoo areas, and dermal layers with tattoo pigments are cut out of the skin. This method leaves a scar behind.

5. Laser tattoo removal: Laser surgery is the most effective tattoo removal options and has least damage to the skin. The laser beam can be selectively set up to remove tattoo pigmentation without harming the surrounding skin. The healing duration is much shorter with laser surgery except the treatment cost is very high.

Which Tattoo Remover Will Work The Best For You?

Posted on 4th of July, 2010
Elisa Cortez asked:

Getting body art is a serious decision, and one that some people really do not take very seriously. These are the people who view getting body art as more of an act of rebellion than anything else. Sure, they might be really excited to get body art, but after a while that portrait of their ex girlfriend or ex boyfriend really becomes annoying.

So, these people need to either get a new tattoo to cover the old one, or start thinking about finding a tattoo remover. It is lucky that they even have the latter option, because just a couple of decades ago the person either had to cover the tattoo, wait for the sun to fade it (which can lead to skin cancer), or just try to hide it.

Before a person starts thinking about which tattoo remover would be right for them, it is important for them to have a better understanding as to how the tattoo is applied in the first place. When many people get their first tattoo, they comment as to how painful it was. That is because a needle is simultaneously making holes in the upper epidermal layers and injecting those holes with tattoo ink.

Since the tattoo ink bonds to the skin molecules, it is that process that is meant to make the tattoo permanent. So, an effective tattoo remover will need to break apart and gradually eradicate those ink clad skin molecules. That being said, there are two main choices that a person could make when it comes to selecting a tattoo remover.

The first choice is something that would work better for people who only have small tattoos that they want to get rid of. This method is known as TCA removal. Basically, TCA is a clear liquid that is gently applied to the tattoo area with a q tip. The TCA is then supposed to be left on the area for a certain amount of time.

TCA is a chemical, and it works to not only break apart the skin molecules that have been bonded to the tattoo ink, but also to dissolve the upper skin layers so that new clear, new skin tissue can emerge. Many people choose this removal method because it is less expensive. However, it also has to be done at home by the person him or herself once every few weeks. So, in order to prevent scarring, it is very important that the person follow the directions.

The second removal method that is an option is laser removal, which works well for any size tattoo. This is an option that, although more expensive, is something that more people choose because a dermatologist does the treatment in a medical setting.

Each procedure is an outpatient one in which a topical anesthetic cream is first applied to the area. Then, using a handheld device, the dermatologist directs the laser at certain areas of the tattoo. The laser heat gradually ruptures the inked skin molecules, while the laser light stimulates the growth of new skin tissue.
